Day 1: In the Books
The first day of Pedal to the Pitch is officially complete—and I’m feeling a mix of relief and reflection.
This past weekend, surrounded by friends, family, and colleagues in Connecticut, I felt a deep mix of excitement and fatigue before the launch. Oddly enough, I kept thinking, I can’t wait to start—and to rest. Rest. That’s what I half-jokingly called today’s 46-mile ride with over 4,000 feet of elevation gain. Physically? Definitely not restful. But mentally? It was exactly what I needed.
Out on the road, I could finally let my mind wander—tuning into the birds, catching the odd scent of roadside decay, dodging garter snakes, waving at folks mowing their lawns, and mostly ignoring my phone. (Mostly.)
Partnering with the LouCity & Racing Foundation has been incredible—tapping into the media power and support of two professional clubs has helped bring visibility to this ride in a way I never imagined. But truthfully, after weeks of screen time, logistics, and anticipation, I’ve been craving open skies, nature, and that unmatched feeling of speeding downhill with 80 pounds of gear (36 mph today—felt amazing… please don’t tell my mom).
The first 20 miles were fairly smooth, though it took about ten before my brain stopped buzzing and my body started syncing with the rhythm. The last 25 miles? A whole different story. Three hills with 7% grade and a cumulative 4,000-foot climb reminded me that, yes, this is real—and it’s going to be a challenge.
But the reward? A hot shower, the most satisfying leftover sandwich ever, catching up with loved ones, and crawling into bed before 9 p.m. I’m a little sore, yes—but grateful.
Tomorrow brings a state line crossing (hello, New York!), a lighter elevation profile, and a stay with a WarmShowers host—something I’m very much looking forward to.
Let’s keep pedaling.
